We recommend that the cylinder head is skimmed when the head gasket is to be replaced to ensure you have the perfect surface for the head gasket to seal. We also calculate the minimum amount that we can take off. There is a limit that should be observed and we have to consider piston protrusion. If the distance of the valves is now closer after a cylinder head is skimmed, we can calculate how far the piston rises and make sure that no contact can be made between the valves & pistons.
